On March 16 2007 Menu Foods Inc. announced a recall of all its "cuts and gravy" style dog and cat food that was produced at the facility in Emporia, Kansas between December 3, 2006 and March 6, 2007.

The recall only pertains to particular brands manufactured by Menu Foods Inc. At this time the recall has expanded to include some dry foods as well as those in the can and pouch.  Many of the recalled products are being recalled as a voluntary and precautionary basis and have not necessarily been shown to cause illness.

There are numerous companies that utilize Menu Foods for production of their food.  To see a complete list of brands of food that may be affected see the website to the right.

Menu Foods in conjunction with the FDA announced the recall after several animals in a feeding trial became ill or died of apparent acute renal failure.  Research is being conducted to determine the cause of the problem.  As of April 14th, the FDA has determined that the toxin responsible for illnesses and deaths is associated with wheat gluten and rice protein that was imported from China.  Within the wheat gluten a substance called Melamine was found.  It is not clear at this time whether the Melamine is truly the cause of injury or should just be treated as a marker for the tainted food.  There is also evidence of a second substance called Cyanuric acid that may be contributing to the reported illnesses.  There is some thought that alone these substances may be non-toxic but in combination they become problematic causing crystals to form in the urinary system.

Consumers who have product that is being recalled should discontinue feeding it and return it to Menu Foods in accordance with the procedure found at their website (www.menufoods.com/recall).

At this time the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has recommended that all pets who have consumed recalled food should have a minimum data base performed (bloodwork and urinalysis).  If you wish to schedule an appointment with any of our veterinarians please call at
