Pet Insurance Questions

The following lists frequently asked questions regarding health insurance for pets.  Currently there are several valid companies that provide benefits to clients for their pet's medical care.  With recent medical advances and rising medical costs, it is becoming increasingly beneficial to have an insurance plan for your pet.

1.

Why should I get pet insurance?

Having pet insurance allows an individual to make treatment decisions for their pet based on what is best medically, rather than finances.

2.

When is the best time to get insurance for my pet?

When your pet is young and healthy.  Purchasing insurance at this time will mean that your pet has no prior conditions so you will not be denied or given exclusions on your policy.

3.

How does pet insurance work?

You sign up with the company of your choice.  When you bring your pet in for care, you bring a claim form with you.  We will help you fill out the claim form.  You will be required to pay for our services the day of the appointment.  However, once you mail in your claim form, your insurance company will send you a reimbursement check for the benefits that were covered by your plan.

4.

What do the plans cover?

It depends on which company and plan you choose.  Most plans cover many types of treatment for traumatic injuries and diseases.  In some plans you can even get coverage for preventative health care such as vaccinations, dental cleanings, and wellness screens.  Often times treatment for genetic diseases, such as hip dysplasia, are excluded from the plans, as are conditions acquired prior to the purchase of the plan.

5.

How much does pet insurance cost?

It depends on which company and plan you choose, but the company that we recommend costs between $25-30 per month, and they have discounts for multiple pets.

6.

Which company do you recommend?

We recommend V.P.I. (veterinary pet insurance company).  V.P.I. is the longest existing pet insurance company, with 25 years of experience.  This means they will still be here when you need them.  They also allow you to use your coverage at any veterinary hospital anywhere in the world.  In addition, they are now providing well care options, meaning preventative medicine such as vaccines, dewormer, and frontline are all covered.  Finally it takes an average of 28 days to get your refund from your benefits.  This is a much quicker turn around time than most human insurance plans!

7.

How do I sign up?

You can apply for pet insurance through their website at www.petinsurance.com or call them at 1-800-USA-PETS.
